Don’t worry, Americans. These tariffs will eventually be overturned and the government will be forced to hand that money right back to the rich corporations that rule over you.
And Canadians will continue to boycott us made shit!
I thought he wasn’t allowed to do this shit anymore?
After the Supreme Court struck down much of Trump’s earlier tariff program in February, the administration turned to other legal authorities. For Canada, Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a rarely used Depression-era provision allowing tariffs of up to 50% against countries deemed to discriminate against U.S. businesses.
The administration has a full time team of lawyers grepping every corner of the Federal code to justify anything they do with obscure law and bullshit arguments.
If there’s one good thing to come from Trump, it’s that he’s shown the president has the ability to do nearly anything they want
I won’t accept any excuses from future presidents
Since when do laws stop him? SCOTUS says he is above the law.
This shit was just ruled illegal. So what the fuck? What the fuck are we even doing here? Can someone just (redacted) this fucking clown already?
Companies pay tariffs and pass the costs on to consumers. Tariffs ate declared illegal. Companies get a refund, pocket the extra money they charged consumers. Rich people got richer.
Worked the last time so they do it again.
Different legal justification this time. They’re using a 1930 law about discrimination against US businesses. It’s clearly bullshit, but they’ve learned it doesn’t matter
Some ways for Trump to impose tariffs were ruled illegal. Unfortunately there are still other routes he can try.
and if he runs out of those ways which will be ruled illegal, he’ll just make up new ways like if your name is Trump, you can do it, and watch it take another year to go through the courts anyway.
I’ve said it elsewhere and I’ll say it here once again, Canada and probably Mexico need to see about putting a total embargo on US goods, services, and flights. Hold them until Trump is dead or out of power, if it collapses the US economy and maybe the feds as well who cares. I’m saying this as a Californian who’s local economy is held up by the transportation of goods along the 10 and 15.
EU, China and others should join the fun as well.
Probably but Mexico and Canada have the most direct incentives. China for example doesn’t want the US to implode since that has a solid chance to eliminate one of their major consumer bases and depending on how the US comes out of it either intact or not it could result in broad economic realignment towards locally produced goods and decreased consumption therein.
True, but at the end of the day, the goal is to force US to some common sense, not its implosion, though implosion could happen anyway even if we do nothing.
Ah I think it would be more appropriate to enact excise taxes on energy to the us at this point maybe 10-15 cents a kwhr 30-50 per barrel of oil.
Call it the asshole tax
Not sure where Lemmy gets its information from, but Canada is a net importer of US electricity since 2023.

And we don’t make oil, we extract bitumen sludge and send it to be refined in Texas.
You want the damage to be quick and brutal so as to cause as much friction as possible, taxes won’t necessarily due this due to the fact the goods and resources that are effected would likely still be present. Better to remove materials outright and cause as much friction as possible, make the demands for Trump’s removal clear and also make it clear that succession would have the same opening of trade.
Art of the deal.
You know, the amount of times our lives have been made more expensive in the last 2 years is too damned high. Who will pocket the refunds this time?
Is that “$20 Billion” per year?
It’s just a tax.
