RFK and the Republican deregulation shits keep coming.

I would not be surprised if the next Pandemic starts in the US at this rate.
There’s not enough people to diagnose and analyse when it starts, there’s not enoughmoney in the CDC to make workable equipment to treat patients, there’s noone left to create a treatable vaccine and there’s not enough intelligent people to actually take it to create immunity.
Currently, the rest of the world is thinking…that’s not neccessarily a bad thing.
Thank you Mr President.
they will still find a way to blame it on china

or OBAMNA
I live in rural NY and went to a local Amish produce stand last weekend, and asked if they had any lettuce available and they said they sell out of lettuce every single morning. They can’t grow it fast enough. America’s industrial food supply system is failing.
As a Canadian

We are having every vegetable be recalled except Mitch McConnell.
EVERYONE has TDS! I don’t remember YOU PEOPLE Complaining about ALL THESE FOOD RECALLS under Joe BYEDIN! The ONLY solution is TDS and NOT the Illegal Immigrant Elon Musk FIRING Hundred of Thousands of people whos Job was to PREVENT this Type of thing!
Have Americans considered importing food so they don’t have to risk eating American food?
Do you even understand what you’re asking? The lettuce was IMPORTED from Mexico via Taylor Farms. These berries may have as well.
The distributors hide their supply chain and claim it to be “industry secrets” to keep us from knowing where we get our food.
This shit is insane.
I’m sure they know that, no country grows every crop sold at stores. It’s the usual “le american bad” that’s beat like a dead horse here lol
Usually rightfully so but man is it just getting a tad boring
America is bad but it’s all the complaining about things that humanity as a whole is bad for then pretending it’s America only that’s so damn annoying. They think they popped out of a golden non American vagina just for being on different soil. They can’t see the irony in the way they think.
True, too much America bad, mixed some (not all) with incognito ml users who glaze NK for example.
Wow bro, no need go bring Dear Leader into this!
Taylor Farms is based in California
And they import their food from distributors in Mexico. Why is this hard?
Ok…
Is America good?
Did I say it was? Is it the worst?
I asked a question. Can you not answer it?
In the context of this thread, with fucking up agencies, causing more risk to its citizens under the guise of “cutting costs” while the national debt just went to 40 Trillion today. Yeah it’s bad for that. Gaza bad too if that gives you warm fuzzies.
Were you expecting a different answer?
I don’t think blanket “everything about X is bad because Y” is a healthy way to view the world.
I just wondered if there was any thought process other than very boring very overused platitudes I’ve seen on every forum known to man
Who cares where the food comes from? It’s a drop in quality control thanks to these businesses feeling emboldened by Trump’s gutting of regulatory agencies that’s the problem.
It matters for the same reason knowing who sold it matters. If the farm in Mexico supplied multiple sources, then you can avoid it if you’re aware. The degradation in quality and regulation is all the fault of the US government, and that is in turn the fault of Taylor for not holding their farms to higher standards…
Food of this sort is mostly imported.
That’s most of the problem, the diarrhea lettuce was coming from Mexico.
That being said, Farmer (possibly third-party, likely exclusively contracted to meet Taylor standards)->Processed by Taylor facility in Mexico->Taylor Fresh Foods->Taylor Farms->Grocery store.
The entire supply chain was Taylor the whole way regardless of what country and their “safety” checks failed.
But several stages had US safety inspections in the past.
Taylor produces millions of pounds of food every season. Impossible to avoid contamination.
Montezuma’s revenge!
Monsanto’s Revenge
Hahahahaha! Nailed it
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A first initiated a recall…

Most of the people I know are expanding their gardens
Not necessarily cheap work, if you don’t already have good soil and such. It’s also more time intensive than people realize.
Recommend strawberries in the ground, tomatoes, snap peas, and zucchini for the easy stuff. To learn.
Anyone looking to build their soil should look up Korean Natural Farming. Cultivate and feed your local microbes and they’ll feed you. And it’s cheap.
Your comment was the firstI have heard about KNF. As an eternally skeptical microbiologist, I suspected it to be similar to many “organic” farming methods, some of which isn’t scientifically sound, but just gave it a quick review and it seems to be based on some solid principles. I’ll be looking into it for my own garden. Thanks for the recommendation!
I don’t plow, till or weed much. No tiller. Just hand tools - round point shovel, hoe and five tine fork. Clay soil. Brought sand in and use old hay bales for mulch. Soil is fantastic. Very little cost. Very little work. Huge harvest. No harmful pesticides. Those who want to garden should read Ruth Stout and Masanobu Fukuoka
I have cedars that aggressively invade any gardening attempt that isn’t hard-sealed. I have some native berry plants doing alright, they’ve evolved to handle it, but actual food crops are a huge waste of time.
Anyone calling any variety of squash “easy” haven’t ever gardened and dealt with squash bugs (vine borer)
Fair. My issue is cruciferous turning holy and then dead, no matter what I spray them with.
I use trap crops entirely now and that really does help tremendously with cruciferous, especially using nasturtium, but yeah, I’ve given up on Brussels sprouts here. Nothing seems to save them.
More than 1/3 of America’s produce is imported.
That was probably meant to sound like a lot.
Ok, sorry, to be more precise: Approximately 60% of its fresh fruit, and 38% of its fresh vegetables are imported. Averaged out, that’s 49% of total consumed fresh produce being imported for a population of 342 million people. So yes, it is ‘a lot.’ Google is free btw
Somehow your more than a third turned into nearly half. It’s good that you took the time to verify your work!
Wee Americans should stop exporting these water-intensive crops such as pistachios
Wee Americans are tiny Americans, why are they growing pistachios?
I can’t wait for the Pistachio Lobby and Data Center Lobby to have a range war over water rights. We can wager on it on Kalshi.
It’s the 21st century!
That’s how I am so flummoxed by their water demands! I am just a tiny pistachio
GreenWise-brand organic blueberries on July 3, which later expanded on July 29 to include GreenWise frozen mixed berries
Sold at Publix.
At this point companies all over the world are just sending bad batches of food to the USA.
If only it was possible to verify the quality of food before people eat it…
Cook from scratch as much as possible and wash produce with specialized soap.
“Wash your lettuce with bleach”
-Trump (probably)
Lol no, but they do make veggie soap. We used it when I lived in India and it was recommended.
Got a recommendation on the special soap?
I soak my produce in a combination of 1 cup water, with 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Then after that I soak in plain water and drain. Citric acid and acetic acid will both help kill germs and help get lipid soluble chemicals, (pesticides,) off the produce. After that I drain, and place a clean cloth into a bowl to soak up any moisture, then put the produce in the bowl.
Just look for produce wash at the grocery store.
The answer is do not do that and cook your food.
Even cooking the food isn’t enough in many circumstances, because some food poisoning isn’t caused directly by microbes, or is caused by microbes with spores that can survive being cooked. Microbes multiply in the bad food and produce toxins as a byproduct, or they use hardy spores to multiply instead of dividing. Even if you thoroughly cook the food to kill the microbes, that doesn’t eliminate the nasty toxins or spores they left behind.
Botulism is a good example. Botulism is caused by the botulinum bacteria, but the bacteria itself isn’t harmful. It’s only because the bacteria produces a potent neurotoxin that causes paralysis. Cooking food that was infected with botulinum isn’t enough to eliminate the risk of botulism, because heat doesn’t destroy the neurotoxin.
Or hell, there are microbes that can tolerate temperatures that most food safety standards would consider safe. For example, there is a microbe found in starchy foods that causes something called Fried Rice Syndrome. The spores aren’t killed at boiling temperatures, (which is the temperature you cook rice at), so they can multiply even after the rice is fully cooked. It’s called Fried Rice Syndrome because it’s most frequently seen when people order Chinese takeout for dinner, leave it sitting out on the counter, reheat it a day or two later, (thinking that the heat will kill any microbes and make it safe again), and then suddenly their liver is fucking shutting down. Because the spores weren’t killed when the food was cooked, had time to bloom while sitting out on the counter, and have now thoroughly infected the food.
That’s part of what makes food safety standards so important. They aren’t just focused on what is safe after cooking, because they can’t trust that all foods are cooked well enough to be safe.
All great information - but my point is that produce wash isn’t any more or less effective than just rinsing the thing in water.
That’s all, the idea that it’s specialized soap is sort of silly - do not wash produce in soap, is my point.
Edit: I should say, I’m usually too paranoid to eat something that’s been cooked and left out for over a night - but that’s just me.
No, I’ll keep eating fresh fruits and vegetables and not cooking them
Great, let me know how that works out for you.
That’s the one I use, sorry for Amazon link
Is there a list of stuff safe to eat?
Raccoon peen, whale carcass, bear testicles.
And don’t forget your “ferments”.
The rich.
Ugh, do you know where they’ve been??!
Kraft Macaroni and ramen without veggies?
With the clown running things McDonalds is now your only government recommended “nutrition”.
Stuff you grow at home or the local farmers market
Local small farmers are completely unregulated and untested for the foods they produce.
That’s not necessarily true at all.
It just varies by jurisdiction and the claims a farm makes.
Always worth a visit to the local farms either way.
That’s not necessarily true at all.
Dude, you have three people now in charge of food safety for 400 million, you think they are checking every mom and pop farm?
You think there aren’t local authorities as well? I have friends that work for organic certification groups friends that work for state agricultural agencies, nevermind the collectives, granges, growing associations, and counties.
Not to mention the farmers markets themselves that also have food handling and produce handling guidelines.
And again, you can go visit the farms. Lots of people know thier local farms and do CSA’s.
Curious why you are saying what you are. What experience do you have with local farmers markets?
What experience do you have with local farmers markets?
They are overpriced and sellers are heavy on the organic bullshit. Ok for local white wine moms. Good source of raw milk.
Organic bullshit. Huh. So you don’t know much about them at all?
Do you even know what a CSA is?
Yet still more trustable than government agencies that control quality.
Yeah. Those raw milk sellers are the paragon of food safety.

The lack of tracking of foodborne illnesses because in the US farmers markets are mostly exempt from regulations and tracking, doesn’t correlate to safer food.
Jesus, science better.
Well, when talking about this particular administration’s government I can understand why people would be suspect.
I mean sure, since this US MAGA administration gutted the FDA’s already stretched ability to inspect the thousands of factories but the blanket statement that unregulated farmers markets are more trustable than ANY given government regulatory body, which is how I interpreted the statement, not US Republican regulatory body is incorrect, especially from someone that has a lemmy.ca after their name.
I guess we should start rounding up all the “lemmy.ca” people. Any other generic groups you’d like to add to the list? We’ve got enough torches and pitchforks for everybody.
You mean government agencies that don’t control quality, since that’s what’s causing this problem. Food was plenty “trustable” when we actually had government agencies controlling quality.
You’ve been having dinner with RFK, Jr, haven’t you?
garbage disposal voice noises
The list keeps growing. My solution is to not eat a lot and wash my food and hands really well. I figure the less I eat the less chance I’ll get something.
Deregulation-induced anorexia? That’s a new one for me.
Don’t write it off. It’s also good for my wallet and bloodwork.
It’s all safe, until it is not.
Anything imported is safe, but then you’ll be paying a tariff on it, sooooo…
Why is it every time the repugnitcants dErEgUlAtE something everything goes to shit
Legit answer: well-functioning agencies are invisible when they’re doing preventative work, and it’s hard for them to point to individual achievements. This makes it easier to justify spending on reactionary agencies like law enforcement instead.
When law enforcement captures a murderer, that’s an individual event that can be easily quantified and understood.
When social programs increase the quality of life and education of a person that would otherwise have turned to a life of crime and killed people, we can’t point at that person as an example of the benefits of these programs because nobody knows what was prevented.
Exactly. Well-functioning agencies can point to statistics over long periods of time… But politicians don’t like boring “funding education caused crime to drop by {x}% ten years later” statistics because they aren’t sympathetic nor inflammatory. They’re also hard to attribute directly to the agency in question, because there could always be confounding factors that have skewed the numbers.
It’s like the difference between fire code/building regulations, and a fire department. Builders and real estate developers hate fire code regulations, because it’s expensive to comply with. Fire code prevents a lot of fires from starting, (and ensures buildings can be quickly and safely evacuated if a fire does occur), but it is seen as an expense. It’s something the real estate developer is required to pay for, and they resent it. But everyone loves their local fire department. Fire department funding is seen as an investment. They’re big, flashy, loud, and everyone knows when they work. And notably, the fire department only has to respond when something isn’t prevented by the local fire codes.
If your electrical system quietly works for 50 years without causing any fires, (because of your local building codes requiring the wiring to be done in a way that avoids fires) your fire department never needs to respond to a fire in your building. So the building owners tend to go “why do we even need all these expensive fire regulations, if there hasn’t been a fire here in 50 years?” There isn’t any way to point at the fire code and go “look at all the fires that these regulations prevented in your building,” because the fires never existed in the first place.
In reality, the two (building codes and the fire department) are working in tandem to keep people safe. But one is much more visible, so it’s the one that people tend to focus on.
And importantly, the conservative mindset is entirely focused on direct cause and effect. They’ll never look at larger systems. Criminal does crime, police catch criminal. Cause, effect. Sex causes unwanted pregnancy, unwanted pregnancy leads to abortions. Cause, effect. My building is on fire, fire department responds. Cause, effect.
They’ll never go more than one step away from a given system, because that would remove the direct cause and effect that they’re focused on. They won’t look at why the building caught on fire, or we could prevent it from happening again in the future. Which is why we would see them push to deregulate building codes, while simultaneously pushing to fund the fire department. Because they’re focused on the direct cause and effect. And as far as they’re concerned, anything slipping past the existing regulations is enough to prove that the entire system is ineffective. Because again, they see the cause (whatever slipped through the regulation) so they know what the effect will be. Never mind the fact that the regulation prevented a whole lot of other things from happening. They see a building on fire, and go “well I guess the fire codes are a waste of money. Might as well fund the fire department instead.”
In some cases, literally!
and its runny.
Must have been accidentally exposed to vaccines
blueberry is called the Vaccinum genus
Sold in Publix locations across eight states, the affected products have been removed from shelves, according to the FDA, but have expiration dates into 2028, meaning they could still be in freezers.
“Customers who have purchased the following frozen GreenWise products are reminded not to consume them,” the agency said in a July 30 notice.
The diaper always leaks downhill
Worst trickle-down conceivable.
Right onto the lettuce farm
Frozen berries now, too?!?
I need to know how E. Coli can survive being frozen. I thought for sure frozen stuff was safe.
A lot of microbes can survive freezing, they just don’t reproduce while frozen.
I can’t blame them. I can’t reproduce below zero either.
Ecoli can even survive 90+% alcohol if you think your hands are contaminated soap is the only solution
That’s a crazy fact. Alcohol is usually a goto for killing bacteria. E. Coli is a beast of a bacteria.
