I still don’t get how he is famous, the best thing he did was getting lost on a jetski for hours.

Ive defended the dude before, and before I do let me make it clear I think his personality is “Annoying egomaniac hypebeast douche” but I do respect his hustle from a business perspective.

He is actually a really good producer and I dont mean in terms of actually mixing and producing the music himself, he is more like a movie producer, he has connections, money and a good ear for talent. He buys a beat, calls some people he thinks would be good for the track or would be good on a track together, pays them to do their verses, pays someone to mix it into a complete track and puts it out. The man was Mr Miami when Miami was blowing up, Pitbull was still “Mr 305”, he made flashy obnoxious mainstream rap when everyone was wearing Ed Hardy jeans and Marc Ecko watches… right place, right time and he shot his shot.

I mean the man was the child of palestinian immigrantsand not cashed up ones and is now worth an estimated 70 million having created his own dream job. Have a look at his award nominations on his wikipedia… he is an enormous tool, but he isnt untalented.

I think it’s fair to point out that he could be doing all of that behind the scenes and that he doesn’t need to be shouting his name on every song

But that’s the point, he’s a businessman, not an entertainer.

I mean, I’d find it hard to say he’s not, at all, an entertainer?

Like, I feel most people know him from seeing performances of him. He, essentially, performs the role of hypeman, a lot of times.

I certainly wouldn’t disagree he also acts as a business man but I think he does a lot of entertainment-related work, as well.

He’s also a Palestinian immigrant who built his entire fortune from nothing. And you’re getting downvotes for pointing out the very real common refrains used against many entertainers of color. Everyone freaked the fuck out because Beyoncé put on a cowboy hat for chrissake.

It’s almost like all the most ignorant hivemind elements of Reddit just moved over to lemmy.world - glad they’re mostly confined to one instance at least.

For real; I hope it’s mostly just one instance. I haven’t been paying attention to instances but it feels shockingly widespread on Lemmy (but, given lemmy.world’s size, it could just be that).

Thanks for backing me up and keeping me from feeling crazy.

Ah; I thought you were approaching and conversing in good faith. My mistake.

If you’re unfamiliar with the tone policing of “not following proper decorum” (and that’s exactly what “he doesn’t need to be shouting his name on every song” is; it’s not a debate about whether he can: it’s an assertion that that’s not an appropriate way to behave for the setting), then you should probably familiarize yourself.

But, as a person with lived racial experience, I am very much not reaching.

Ah yes, race-baiting is so good faith.

Fuck off with that holier-than-thou bullshit.
