As stupid as it may sound, I admit there are things about lemmy that I don’t understand. One of those things is the separation to .ml, .world and so on. I just came across a post on lemmy.world but it reads I haven’t logged in. So: do I have to create a new account in order to subscribe/comment on .world or can I use my current account from .ml?

I just do what I did and make an account on feddit.nl or somewhere else that has the most big ones federated with it. I can see everything from hexbears to blahaj. Even .world.

I mean, I am on .world, and I can comment on your .ml post like this.

You should be able to access other instances anywhere from within lemmy.ml unless you click on the wrong link, without needing any new credentials.

Thanks. This makes things… sort of more clear but not by much. Bc I’ve joined an atheism community which apparently is on .world and I can comment there just fine. But at the same that post I mentioned opens at .world and says I must login. (scratching my head where it doesn’t itch 😂) Still, thanks to all three of you for the answers, I wasn’t sure if my question will be answered or deleted.

You can use your Lemmy.ml account! You may wish to create another account if you want to, say, browse just Lemmy.world (or any other instance), but you can also find that same post from your Lemmy.ml account by searching for it. What happened is you clicked a link to the Lemmy.world version of that Lemmy.world post, not the way Lemmy.ml sees it.

If you’re using a browser and follow a direct link to a Lemmy post or comment in another instance, the link takes you to that other instance where you don’t have an account.

If you wish to interact with that thread by commenting, voting, etc., one easy way I’ve found to get to my local instance’s copy of that thread is to copy the URL of the other instance’s thread and search it using your own instance’s search menu. This will usually bring up the local copy of that thread as one of the top results. You can then interact with that thread through your instance with your existing account.

Links to communities have a mechanism that automatically translates the link to the local copy, which is to add an exclamation mark in front of the community address and then select the correct community in the inline search that comes up, which produces a link like this: !asklemmy@lemmy.ml

Unfortunately, I don’t believe that kind of mechanism exists for posts (threads) or comments yet, but perhaps it’s something that the developers will consider in the future.

If you’re using Lemmy in a browser, opening a link will take you to the link’s instance, like opening a new website. This will mean that you need to log in to post etc.

If you use Lemmy through an app, that should handle the links and make it essentially work like one big website. You can open links from any part of Lemmy and be able to post and comment from your existing account.

The only issue may be the fact that you’re on .ml. Some instances have blocked .ml and a few other instances because of what are basically political differences. That will restrict where you can post, and could be part of your issue.
