Yeah partially from it not being very successful by not being a great game, but also point and click was on its way out as a popular genre. It’s still one of my favorite genres and it makes me sad, but it wasn’t very flashy in comparison to genres like fps. I still play a lot of the old Sierra and LucasArts games when I’m feeling nostalgic, so knowing Wine has me covered will always be greatly appreciated.

That’s why I use Emby. Paid for lifetime within a day of switch from Plex (which I also have has lifetime for like a decade) because it has a ton of plugins that have been useful and has a cloud server switch function.

I never played it, but it looked like a good time for people into Pokemon for sure. Unfortunately on the flip side, I know of it being a problem in some specific areas too. A friend in Seattle wasn’t getting any sleep for weeks because idiots were ruining it for everyone by running loudly at 1 to 3 am near his apartment. I hope that if any other big AR game goes live, they enforce quiet hours.

I had a very similar situation many years ago. I worked for a public school district for 23 years in the IT dept, and one of the teachers told me about 10 years into working there that he finally has learned how to work with me. When I asked what he meant he said, “First I’m going to ask you for help with something and you’re going to tell me no. Then you’re going to laugh and say yes.” While I obviously thought my variety of snark was funny and not at all irritating for someone who just wants help, it really made me stop and think.

After resigning from that job, I emailed him to thank him because it really changed my attitude on how to respond to people in tickets and calls. He probably didn’t think much of it at the time but I hope he understands now how much of an impact he made on me.

I might still be an overly sarcastic fuckwit to my team (who responds in kind), but I’ve been told my customer service is always some of the best and I’m able to talk them off the edge, whether they’re pissed at our organization or if they’re in a tech crisis. I feel I’m able to read them much better now and if they get sarcastic, I can return their energy. But otherwise my default is warm responses and keeping calm until we’re done with the issue.

Lol yeah I still have old adventure games on floppy and CD from like 95. Obviously don’t have a floppy drive anymore nor an optical drive in over a decade.

The first example I ever have seen and my favorite was that Day of the Tentacle had a computer that would allow you to play the entire first game, Maniac Mansion.

At this point you’re just fighting semantics. Even a commercial NAS is reliant on the software too, like with Synology. They run the disk management but also can run Docker and VMs with their built-in hypervisor.

I do think that Heroic is the perfect level of automatic vs manual for me. The only confusing bit for me is that if you specify an alternative executable, there’s no way of launching anything else except that executable until you delete it out, even if you use the launch drop-down to pick something else. Every once in a while I have to juggle those because of a config utility or something, or even a mod installer that I want to run in the same prefix. It’s little quirks that are annoying, but once I get things setup it’s all moot anyhow.

Haven’t even heard of Faugus until this post, so I won’t be able to sell you on it.

I used Lutris for quite a while but had to drop it because there’s some really bad network coding in there that causes it to essentially DDoS my DNS server if it can’t give what it expects. For example, when I had installed Dead Space Remake, it was looking for OG assets, which has been moved to a new location, and Remake took that original location. It was sending well over 1000 DNS requests a second for several seconds before my DNS server would 10 min blacklist my PC. If took me 2 weeks to figure out exactly what was happening because I wasn’t noticing it was Lutris specifically and was thinking my NIC drivers were killing my connection.

I moved to Heroic and tbh, I don’t see anything in Faugus that Heroic isn’t already doing. I have GOG, Epic, and Amazon games in there, cloud saves with GOG, achievements with GOG (but no pop-ups), and they’ve been using umu for a long time. Also automatically adds my games to Steam with assets. They also have a Wine manager and will actively check for game updates.

Does anyone know what Faugus does better? I’m interested, but like OP, I’d have to be sold on it too.

Agreed. As someone who dd’s Arch, never suggest Arch to a true Linux newbie. It’s just a lot more involving than someone new is prepared for generally. CLI has never bothered me, but I’ve been using CLI since MS-DOS 5.

Arch is something I would wait for until someone has had a chance to dip their toes in first to see if they even care to invest their time into learning.

Interesting that you felt the game assumed you made choices you didn’t, I hadn’t ran into that despite very frequently picking the less popular options. I won’t ask for specifics for obvious reasons, but that does make me curious whether there was a bug or a gap in logic. Definitely not a flawless game as gamepad is a very flawed input option when things get hectic, but damn the writing and action sequences had me hooked immediately.

Still can’t believe my first time through was only 7.5 hours. Can’t wait to go through with different choices.

Yep, I manage a lot of domains for my organization and our members, and work on our and infrastructure regularly. I basically always end all DNS queries with a period to ensure Windows or Linux aren’t trying to append anything like a search domain and screwing with my results. Fixes so many issues, especially when you’re expecting an NXDOMAIN result.

Can confirm what the other commenter said, completely impossible to have an effect. .com and .gov and .fr and .nz are what’s called TLDs or Top Level Domains. Everything is delegated down from that level for any subdomains. .fr and .nz are country owned and any attempt to take control of that would be returned to their respective governments by ICANN.

I played from 2005 to 2009 and it was my first MMO. I learned a lot about my own addictive nature with WoW and MMOs in general.

I got lost in the minutiae of theorycrafting out builds and because of being in one of the more hardcore raid guilds during vanilla (5 raid nights a week), basically every raising resto druid on the server knew me and would cross faction just to hang out and talk builds and strategy. Was a ton of fun, but kept me so invested beyond even my raid schedule and when I quit, my druid alone had 1 year of in-game time.

Quitting WoW was easily the best decision I could have made (during WotLK) for my own mental health and for my (at the time) young professional career. I learned that of all the “close friends” didn’t actually give a damn when the game was removed from conversations. I had a lot of fun while playing but I allowed it to take over my social life to the point I didn’t realize I no longer had one.

It’s funny, the game that got me over WoW was Dragon Age: Origins which dropped within a few weeks of quitting. It felt and played kind of like a single player WoW in a weird way, and I just never felt like picking it back up.

I don’t really think about my time with WoW much and usually think about all the great moments, but then if I really think about it, I can remember all the incredibly toxic moments too and that keeps me away even though I’m sure 90% of all those people have moved on by now too.

I have to agree with Linus for the Linux kernel and for git. Not just because he’s well known, but there are few developers who have had the influence he has and continues to have on a daily basis over the course of the last few decades. I really worry what will happen when he finally decides to step down. He gets a lot of flak for his rants against other developers, but for good reason: he demands a certain level of coding quality because it effects billions of servers and workstations, but with no room for being tactful or gentle. Some devs get lazy and are inefficient, and that would effect stability for everyone. Also: I would hate to submit a module to Linus because I’m also lazy and inefficient in my coding.

Has he ever done a solo project though? Even the first game titled with his name, Pirates!, wasn’t solo. It was his project though.

And I can think of other games with people’s names before the game title, but they were the author of the source material and not involved with the game development itself: Tom Clancy and Clive Barker.
