I keep forgetting that in the USA it’s normal to keep cats indoors. In my country it’s the opposite, it’s the norm for cats to go outside. We think that “jailing” them in a house isn’t appropriate. I’ve seen cats that were kept indoors, they were like depressed slobs despite their many toys and cat trees and whatnot in comparison to the ones that get to go outside as they please.

It is still the norm in the US, especially in rural areas. Unfortunately, cats are absolute hell on wildlife, especially ground nesting birds like quail and killdees. We keep our cats inside, they watch bird TV through the windows.

She was okay until she heard a person, then hid just her head under the carrier. Overall seemed to go pretty well, but maybe she’s happier just stating out a window

I wouldn’t leap to conclusions. My cats first time was overstimulating. If it’s new, it’s a lot to take in. Give the lady more time and exposure. Bring toys. Play if they engage. String. Something familiar.
