Just look at what happened in Romania for an idea of what banning a political candidate does. They went from the pro-Russian candidate almost certainly losing a second round to the new pro-Russian candidate almost certainly winning. Not saying I have a better suggestion, but it seems about 50 percent of voters everywhere want significant change. At the same time only centrists (attracting the 50 percent that are happy with the status quo), and extreme right wing candidates appear to be viable.
