Competition for membership and money. People changing from say christianity to islam or to buddhism is less likely, they’re outsiders and foreign, but not direct competitors. Making your version of Christianity more cult-ish by fomenting hatred of the similar competition to prevent people from leaving or losing church benefactors does the same thing.
