  • I think it’s mass anxiety caused by uncertainty across the board.

Political uncertainty as far right and authoritarian movements pick up speed in various democracies.

Labor market uncertainties due to companies tightening their belts in the face of economic uncertainty, and trying to replace workers with AI.

Economic uncertainty due to wars disrupting energy and supply chains and the looming specter of recession/depression.

Geopolitical uncertainty due to several ongoing wars and several tense situations that could devolve into actual conflicts, not to mention the major paradigm shift happening where the US is actively ceding its position as a global leader to China.

Climate uncertainty as we refuse to address climate change and burn mountains of coal to power plagiarized chat bots.

The weirdest part is everybody is for the most part pretending everything is normal while silently being anxious on their own.

  • My company recently hired some “AI expert” to help us slop the place up a bit more. He gave a presentation where he had an expressionless, dead-eyed, generated version of himself straight from the bottom of the uncanny valley introduce him, talked about how much he loves AI “art,” droned on about how AI helped him improve his golf game, then proceeded to give the most substanceless presentation for a good half hour rife with buzzwords and AI generated stock photos.

So anyway, employee morale is super high now that we had to sit through a presentation where a man making 3 times our salary demonstrated that his entire job is to tell the executives what they want to hear about AI every once in a while and play around with chatbots and AI image and video software the rest of the time.

  • When I was in college in 2013, this one guy in one of my Computer Science classes was talking about this new app called Tinder. Nobody could understand what the appeal of it was, everyone seemed to agree it was weirdly superficial and shallow.

Pretty surreal looking back now that app-based dating has become such a standard thing. Glad I met my wife before it happened, I’m not cut out this brave new dating world.
