Bremen, GERMANY – The 23 countries of the European Space Agency agreed on Thursday to provide €22.1 billion to cover everything from rocket subsidies and science projects to the modernisation of Europe’s spaceport infrastructure.

The commitments, which will mostly run to 2028, mark a roughly 20% increase when adjusted for inflation compared with ESA’s last ministerial pledging summit in Paris in 2022, at which €16.9 billion was committed to various programmes.

Germany has a surprisingly large amount of space tech startups that have been complaining about their dependencies on SpaceX. Many things they produce are for the ESA but they all go up with Musk‘s rockets. It would be fantastic if there was an alternative but I won‘t hold my breath just yet.

Ariane6 can compete with Falcon9, but the German start up rockets are much smaller. They also have not had a successfull launch, although Isar Aerospaces Spectrum has had a lift off.
