  • Reading into the Wikipedia sources it seems the type of sealant used was liked not cured sufficiently before it was exposed to the elements. (Makes sense, the average pool isn’t getting cooked in direct sunlight like the reflecting pool was).

It’s like a home chef trying to cook in an industrial kitchen for 1000s of people. Trump’s pool guy just repeated the process used for personal pools on a project way beyond the scale they were qualified for. Shit didn’t work how they expected it to in a completely different climate and and scale.

It short. “Trump’s friend” was completely unqualified. Shocker.

  • I really doubt it. Maybe in the direct area that is was poured into. But they’d literally have to have dumped swimming pools worth of it into it for it to do anything.

The pool takes 6 Million gallons of water to fill. They were pouring in peroxide by hand. By hand. They were essentially pouring gallons of water into water. When hydrogen peroxide is exposed to any heat (like from the fucking sun in the summer) it degrades significantly faster. The hydrogen peroxide just turns into water while releasing oxygen gas.

It could have reacted with the paint directly where it was being poured in before getting diluted. But I think the paint job was just garbage in the first place. It probably wasn’t sealed correctly. Given how entire sheets of it were just floating around.

Edit: Wikipedia and it’s sources agree with me.

According to a variety of experts interviewed by a variety of sources, the application of hydrogen peroxide to reduce algae in the Reflecting Pool was likely too diluted to account for the magnitude of the damage.

  • Yes, but that’s still a failure of society. A 7 year old is legally required to be in school and any exception to that (homeschooling, medical) would also require a physical interaction and evaluation of the child’s conditions. The state either completely abandoned this child; or individuals meant to ensure the safety of children ignored their responsibilities. They need to be held accountable as well. You don’t “miss” the abuse of a 255 lb 7 year old, a 180 lb 5 year old, etc.

Hoarders, famously, aren’t moving around avoiding law enforcement. They have an address, they pay taxes and claim dependents for tax breaks so they can hoard more stuff. We as a society failed this 7 year old.

  • While obviously legislation like this should pass to ban child marriages on the books. I just want people to know that this would not do much to stop the practice in the majority of cases.

It is true that it would reduce this abuse to some degree. Or at the very least give the groomed children more time to develop and realize they are being abused. It would be a good step.

However, the majority of these marriage arrangements are already in place in these communities long before they go “on the books”. It is usually extremely patriarchal religious communities where women and girls are not only subject to usual patriarchal structures of our society, but to a form of oppression, different from but on the same level as an apartheid state.

These communities definitely stay protected in the rare instances of any form of law enforcement by these types of laws. But, it is on the level of black people “technically” being allowed to vote in the Jim Crow south. Getting rid of a law like this will not change to the structures of enforcement or the communities that allow these abuses to happen today. The Jim Crow south needed federal law enforcement to enforce its abolishment. That’s why I make the comparison. The local law enforcement are literally the people that uphold the patriarchal structures and abuse to begin with.

Unfortunately, the real solution to these issues is not what anyone wants to hear. These communities need to be broken apart, they need fundamental reeducation, and the children of these communities need to be separated from the abusers. This often means separating children from their mothers; as the women in this society are both victims and abusers.

The adults need to be subject to mental health care and reeducation to give them the opportunity to show they can function outside of the abusive community they were born into.

These are communities built to abuse and oppress children and women. They are Nazi like societies that should be treated as such.

We have a long way to go when we can’t even get a simple law like this passed. And it’s really depressing.

  • Resources are just another state of labor value. The resources need extraction, the resources need refining, etc. All value is derived from labor. There is no value in a resource without labor. Labor makes those resources valuable by making it available for use.

A prompt doesn’t appear magically when you spend a token. A large amount of labor and resources went into the GPU that produces the output. That’s my point.

A “token” is just a currency conversion. You’re using USD (or other currency) to buy tokens to spend on getting access to the computation produced by the resources and means of production that are controlled by datacenter owning capitalist.

  • Well, when you use tokens you are using energy. The token doesn’t have value in and of itself. But that basically becomes a conversation of “what value does currency have”.

In a material sense. Tokens are just a reflection of compute cost. You could have a literal person sitting in a room doing math problems each time you spend a “token”. You would be paying for the value of the “computer”. That labor has value.

In this sense the tokens are being spent on an extremely inefficient computation to yield text on a screen that may or may not be helpful to the user. But, the cost of that text generation is in the labor to extract oil, to extract minerals and rare earth metals, water infrastructure, electric infrastructure. Even for the labor of the software developers that build the AI systems.

Paying for a token is just paying for that labor value. The token represents that in the same way currency does.

Now, we can all use currency to buy mud pies. Our current economy being built up on mud pies doesn’t mean there is no value. Currently we value mud pies. The mud pies might not have actual material use or value. But, currently we are puting tons of labor and resources into building those mud pies. Those resources and labor have value. That’s where the tokens cost is derived from; even if the tokens just give us mud pies in return.

  • As a engineer and parent that got a lot of these awful $SCIENCE subject related books as gifts. I’m sure you can find a similar one.

But I have yet to get one that wasn’t just a horribly written kids book. Like, I use to think writing a kids book was a joke.

It’s extremely difficult to find books that are eye catching enough for a child, interesting enough for a parent to WANT to read, and has memorable parts so the kid WANTS to read it.

The $SCIENCE topic books for kids are all just boring art, almost all the pages either look the same (when they try to tell an actual story) OR they are like reading a dictionary where no page is actually related.

None of them are filled with puns for parents either. I don’t get it. That’s low hanging fruit.

Maybe I’ve gotten bad ones. But holy shit. Give a Doctor Seuss book to me any day.

If you want to buy a $SCIENCE related joke gift to one of your friends. Give the kid a T-shirt. The books are awful.

  • Yeah. We just need to remove Trump and then attack the countries that the Democrats war monger over instead. /s

Trump isn’t colluding with China. What you are seeing is US presidents being brought to heel by the superiority of the Chinese economy on a global stage. He has no good cards to play and China is able to damage the US influence through it’s trade powers alone. America has lost its own game of neoliberalism and “free trade” to a country run by a communist party.

This has been the result of decades of neoliberal policy starting with Carter and exploding with Reagan. This isn’t unique to Trump. This is the new normal and Americans are not use to a world in which America can’t force it’s will on other countries for the benefits of its wealthy oligarchs. So it’s more comforting to place all blame on a single incompetent and corrupt president like Trump.

You’re confusing this with “collusion” with China because Trump directly takes bribes from other nations. China doesn’t have to do that. They are the country that gets to flex on the US right now; as the US empire is crumbling and lashing out at Iran, Cuba, and countless other countries (including Allies).

We got Trump because of the road we were following. We didn’t follow this road because we got Trump.
