The french have always been very chauvinist about their language. They do not like English, as they view french as an equally great world language. It was likely somehow obligated to have an English version, and subsequently a somewhat conscious choice by some employees or board of directors to not keep it stocked as well as the French version.

Also, it is over tourism. There are so many tourists people are sick of them. It’s not a french but a human thing. I’ve seen “touris raus” in Berlin too… The downside of raising housing prices etc are by a significant part of population valued more than the economic advantage of more local consumption (and I get that).

It’s not so black and white. Yes asshole behaviour. But also: the sidewalk is very narrow, there are many shops, people living in the neighborhood are likely to not have any garden or tiny balconies etc. The (other) real culprit is the street designer / city planner. You can see on the other side of the street that despite it being a very narrow, multimodal busy place… they did NOT sacrifice all (free?) streetside parking in favour of more “living space” for pedestrians. Likely recorded during heat wave, with unlivably overheated Appartments and not enough trees/parks in the area…

It should have never been allowed for Facebook to take over WhatsApp and Instagram or Google taking over YouTube… It’s the opposite of what capitalism should be according to people who defend it: allowing such mega monopolies destroys the few benefits the free market has to offer. Yes, immich sends all my pictures to the homeserver AND I can immediately see all my partners pictures pop up on my phone. Immich is very cool for that.

I too dislike that immich “scrambles” my pictures. I had it quite well organised over multiple decades (folders per year & location), but how well immich works seems worth losing this idea of organisational control over the collection. The immich duplicate detection for example is superb (it isn’t on nextcloud). It for example detects very easily that a 400kb sent or received picture is actually the same as a 4Mb much higher resolution original picture with a completely different filename and different metadata.

I still have my pictures collection organised old school from before immich on various back-up media and the hardest part to me now is deciding to keep that or convert it all to the “immich style” directory… Since it’s now very difficult to add new pictures to it without loads and loads of duplicates.

I did find the setting in immich which will somewhat still organise it in folders per month now, but it’s not the same, since a month often isn’t a logical grouping directory, for example if you go on holiday last week of December+ first week of January: pictures will still be spread across various folders.

My main downside on immich currently is that we can’t easily “share” metadata over a few different users (locations added later, recognised faces etc) although we share many faces/locations in pictures… It’s a hard choice wether I still want to make the few users all use the same account after all because of that (which will have other downsides like no personal private folder)

Yes filebrowser is ending it’s a shame, very simple tool. Copyparty works fine too but too many features I don’t need.

I don’t have a better suggestion for mobile backup. I only have pictures (immich) backed up automatically. Everything else on my phone would be lost or it already sits somewhere else from the beginning (like music)

Look at dietpi. There is a regular pc version (x86).

Their own “we do it for you” software choice is somewhat limited, but everything is really easy imo. You can always install other things they don’t offer, with apt or docker or … But the basic dietpi system is a super reliable, super lightweight, easy to manage OS.

For the music: dietpi+jellyfin+ tailscale+finamp on phone. Tailscale on phone, point it to only use VPN for finamp. It works incredibly stable and reliable for me. I tried many other “make it work remotely” options first, tailscale is just magic. If it’s only for streaming music to your phone, I don’t consider tailscale a privacy issue at all.

I suggest to skip the nextcloud. It’s a mess. Use immich for pictures and paperless for documents.

If hosting some other files that don’t fit those 2 categories, things like filebrowser or copyparty are great. Nextcloud is really quite the challenge tbh and imo not worth the hassle it is for a typical selfhoster… It’s hard to get the most out of it. It pays of for medium organisations maybe but not for just you and a few other people…

They didn’t have to keep it proprietary, and I think in many “computer problems” the certified dealers will just replace 1 circuitboard by a new one, but it’s a part which private customers are not able to order and replace themselves

I have a super common type (in EU) of Philips water kettle. It’s a reliable machine. Unfortunately the little filter “screen” for the pouring sprout is starting to break now, after many many years of use. I can’t find a replacement. It’s a super easy to manufacture part, must be a very common “breaking thing” on this widespread device… Nope.

Car manufacturers screwed over consumers the last 10-15 years big time! Cars used to be the big thing many could fix a lot on by themselves and were proud to do so. Then they basically just said incrementally to the DIY’ers “it’s all computers now, not your cup of tea”, purposely made cars less and less self repairable and got away with it! It’s infuriating.

The EU ones will become a lot more valuable on second hand markets…

The only neighbouring country with certainly better train travelling imo is Switzerland.

French tgv is fucking expensive and trains are a lot less comfortable.

Dutch has great trains but it’s basically all intercity/regional/local. It’s more like a very large S-Bahn Network, Not comparable to ice experience.

Belgian trains are just shit often and just as much delayed, also no real long distance trains.

Luxembourg is free but the trains are also very unreliable…

I’m always torn by the turning the lights off every time I leave a room shortly and will be back in a few to 15 minutes and turn it on again. At which point is the faster breaking of the LED lightbulb because of way more on/off cycles worth minding more over the slight use of electricity from leaving it on while gone? How long of a planned “useless light on” is actually still worth it?
